Date 1964 | Lella & Massimo Vignelli
Stackable, colorful, and fun – when you look at this sleek stacking dinnerware you can’t help but smile. Loved worldwide, the Max Collection was designed by Lella and Massimo Vignelli, who The New York Times described as “a two-person design army with a shared aesthetic that was sleek and intelligent.”
When our founder Alan Heller saw the Vignelli’s compact stacking dishware in a museum in the late 1960s and learned that the original manufacturer had closed its business, he sought out Lella and Massimo to bring it back into production. Commonly referred to as Hellerware, this dinnerware was the first product in our assortment, and it began a long and very special partnership between Heller and the Vignellis.
Upon its debut in 1964, the Vignelli’s tableware won the Compasso d’Oro – the most prestigious award for industrial design in the world. Designed to be stacked in a tall, straight column that maximizes storage space and creates a neat cabinet interior, each piece fits securely into the other because of a small lip on the bottom. This lip also lifts the piece off the tabletop, giving it the appearance of hovering.
Dishwasher safe, top rack only. Do not microwave.

Why we love it!
Hellerware brings happiness to every table. The shapes are crisp and beautifully proportioned, the glossy rainbow-colored hues transform ordinary days into celebrations, and the fact that this collection continues to be coveted and enjoyed by modernists worldwide is the definition of great design.

I fell in love with them many many years ago. Finally put them at the top of my bucket list. Looking forward to using them through the holidays and after.

In 1970, my mother was given a set of the original, made in Italy, Heller dinnerware and cup/saucer set (in yellow!). The were the “fancy dishes” in the post-modern decor of the living room and dining room of that house. When not being used, the set was on a display shelf in dining room. Didn’t actually get used very often. I took them when she passed 22 years ago, and they have been used in my house almost daily for the last 22 years. My now adult kids called them “Nanna’s Dishes”.
I was thrilled to see that this dish/cup/saucer set is now again in production. I bought this new Heller set as a wedding gift for one of my sons. Would have preferred to get him a set in yellow, just like Nanna’s Dishes, but the white is very nice and has the same clean look.
My favorite feature is the 90-degree angled edge-lip of the plates. Keeps the food on plates (and off table/floors.

Bought a set of the white dinner plates. Already own the multi-colored mugs & know I will enjoy using both together - especially when we eat out on our deck.
